Legacies - Leaving a Gift in your Will to Cuan Mhuire

Cuan Mhuire stk 10

Cuan Mhuire is a charitable drug, alcohol and gambling rehabilitation organisation in Ireland. Cuan Mhuire provides a residential programme to persons suffering from alcohol, other chemical dependencies and gambling. It was founded by Sr. Consilio Fitzgerald, a member of the Sisters of Mercy, in 1966 and has treatment centres and other recovery facilities based across the country, supporting approximately 2500 people each year. Since 1966, more than 100,000 residents have been helped to lead an addiction free life.

Sadly, the regular everyday costs we incur to undertake this work have been increasing – mainly due to the increased demand for our services across the country and the increasing cost of living crisis, which, as you can imagine, directly affects our Treatment Centres and their very limited budgets and resources. The funds we receive each year we use entirely for the benefit of those suffering from addiction.

The income that Cuan Mhuire receives from the State, residents’ contributions, our cafes and garden centres does not meet the ever-increasing demand for our services each year. To continue providing our life changing programmes we need the support of individual philanthropists.

Leaving a gift in your Will is a hugely powerful way to ensure that our work continues in perpetuity. Cuan Mhuire has received very few legacies to date. However, we know that by sharing our story more widely we will encourage more people to support our work. The work we do is so important because it is available to all, regardless of financial capacity, faith or background – all we require is a genuine desire to recover from addiction.

To honour Sr Consilio’s vision we have created the Sr Consilio Legacy Society – we invite you to consider leaving a gift in your Will to Cuan Mhuire to ensure Sr Consilio’s vision for recovery from addiction in Ireland remains unaltered, alive and available for all, in perpetuity.

Sr. Consilio

Leaving a Gift in your Will to Cuan Mhuire

It is very important to ensure any gift you leave in your Will is done correctly, and fully in line with your wishes. To this end, we advise you to always discuss any legacy gift with your solicitor to ensure you receive independent advice.

Leaving a gift in your Will is usually very straightforward. The most popular ways to leave a legacy gift include:

  • Residuary Gift (what resides of your estate)
  • Pecuniary Gift (a certain amount of money)
  • Specific Gift (a particular item(s) of value)

How do I leave a Gift in my Will to Cuan Mhuire?

The first step is to always talk to your solicitor so you can receive independent advice. After which, it is likely that your solicitor will discuss the three options for leaving a legacy gift to Cuan Mhuire, as mentioned above.

To include Cuan Mhuire in your Will you may wish to include the following suggested wording – which should be approved of by your solicitor:

"I give to Cuan Mhuire, Head Quartered in Athy, County Kildare, R14 EC59 (Cuan Mhuire CLG & Cuan Mhuire NI are registered with the Charities Regulatory Authority of Ireland (No.20012724) and The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (No.105761). Revenue Charity Number CHY6648 and HMRC Charities Reference: XR27855

(One of the following bequests, in line with your wishes):

  • “All (or a percentage share of) the residue of my estate whatsoever and wheresoever…”
  • “A (specific item) or all my property known as (name of property) and situated at (location of property).” (This is a method whereby a specific gift relating to the bequest of a particular item or asset such as property, jewellery, shares etc. is included in your Will.)
  • “The sum of (amount in figures and in words).” (This is a pecuniary gift, meaning a fixed sum of money is being included as a gift in your Will.)

Followed by this suggested wording:

“And I direct that my bequest be applied by Cuan Mhuire for its charitable purposes and the receipt of any Trustee of Cuan Mhuire for the time being shall be sufficient discharge to my Executors."

Including Cuan Mhuire in an existing Will?

Again, the first step is to always talk to your solicitor so you can receive independent advice.

If you wish to amend your existing Will to include a gift Cuan Mhuire, you have the option of using a codicil form to update your Will in this way.

A codicil changes or amends your Will, in line with your wishes. Once this form is completed, incorporating all the changes/additions you wish to make, you must ensure that it is signed, witnessed and dated as appropriate.

This codicil must then be sent to the person who holds your Will (this is most probably your solicitor or executor).

The best advice we can give is to ensure you discuss any proposed changes with your solicitor and to always receive independent advice, before making any changes to an existing Will. Publicly available information on making a Will is available in ROI from Citizens Advice Making a Will (citizensinformation.ie) and from the UK you can find out more about how to write a will and leave legacies at:
